Circumfence, I think you don't want anything less that a foot. You want to be able to wrap your arms around, and it should be thin enough so you could touch your elbows while hugging it. lol, strange sentence.
No, I've never hit it that hard. Like I said, quick but gentle. Your knuckles will get red, and stay that was for a while, and maybe a couple small cuts, depending on how rough the bark is.
A little tip: Don't dig in the middle of a rocky area like I did. Of course, I didn't know until I got deep enough -_-
One more bit of advice. You mentioned you were tall. You want the tree to be about your height, plus two feet to put in the ground.

Well, the vest runs 20 lbs, and the wrist/ankle weights about five. You dont' want to go higher than that for a while, no matter how naturally strong you are, trust me. The vest was 50 dollars, and the wrist/ankle weights, I think they were 20 dollars.
Sorry, I kind of blurred my words. I meant, if you've ever really socked someone, you know it kills your knuckles. What I did was cut a tree limb into an eight foot sections, leaving two feet underground. Then you punch the tree fast but gently. It gives you accuracy and tightens up the skin on your knuckles, and whatever else you hit it with. I use the side of my hand, the back of my hand, and my forearms on it. For my palms, I do my squat-thrusts in my nice gravel driveway. lol, be careful with that, though!
Maybe I don't give myself enough credit, but I don't want to brag about my work either...

The two places to find this vest are Walmart and Gold's gym. Walmart is the better bet imo. And yes, ankle and wrist weights, got 'em. They're helpful to a point. Working on jumping and speed with them is really difficuly, and where the vest fits in perfectly.
A good drill for agility, strength, and stamina are squat-thrusts. Squatting, then leaping out and down into a pushup, then leaping back up is quite the excersize, it works just about every muscle group. They use it in the marines, my cousin showed me how to do them.
If you decide to harden up your knuckles/hands/etc, I've got suggestions for that too.

Sounds like you've got it...and the knack for getting people to do your work for you! How does THAT work, lol!
