Well... I'm not so shure just how well i can teack you over the internet, but i can give you some helpfull advice. The only one that comes to my mind right now is this:
Before you draw something, make shure you have something to go by. I'm not saying to draw a pic just like something that already exist, but rather to commit the image of the character to memory, and the more times you see a pic or episode (etc), the better you should be able to draw the character. Also, the same theory can be applied to different styles of drawing (especially anime styles). In other words, if your unfamiliar w/ chibi style, look at a bunch of different chibi drawings. If you need some help drawing the original anime style of something, find a bunch of pics like it. I did this kinda thing a lot before my 1st pic, and look how it turned out, and I'm more used to drawing machines than anything else. Should work out pretty well for you.
P.S: It also doesn't hurt to be a perfectionist w/ your pics, but only as long as you have a lot of extra paper.
