No, neither reference pictures or recolors are bad, but you should mention that you did recolor a picture/use a ref.
 
It's kinda like someone drawing/recoloring one o your pics, and not telling anyone that theirs wasn't the original.
 
Anyway, as long as you give credit, you're fine.
