well basicly it's about this genius boy called light who finds this cursed notebook, if he writes some ones name down they die
 
he wants to use that power to make the world a better place so he is using it on criminals
 
the police try to find him only going by the media name for him 'Kira', they want to find and arrest him because they see it as murder.
 
this young detective called L asks him to help with the investigation as 'Kira' has already killed the FBI agents sent to gather information on some suspects, they suspected a member of the 'Kira' investigation was doing it, Light's dad was the head of it.
 
L isn't his real name so light agrees to help out, so he can eventualy find out his rteal name then kill him.
