Personally, I don't understand it either. Actually, I just don't understand how life is depicted as wonderful for people on TV when almost all of my friends have had terrible misfortunes in their lives (yes, contrary to Calisto's profile once saying that real people are from the city, the rurals and subarbs have them too). (and that probably earned me a smack for going off in that spiel)
