Backgrounds should be on a different layer than the ones used for coloring the characters. This will salve the problem of whiteness around the characters.

Try doing more with basic shading and light sources. Start out by looking at some ref pictures even pictures of real humans may help.

Try not to use black for shading. You may want to use dark skintones like pinks browns oranges reds and such until you get more use to it, Then you can move onto blues and greens and other such odd colors.

Don't rely on photoshop tools like the burn and dodge tools or the blur tool
