well you see in the case of the Joker and Batman. the complexity lies in the fact that neither one will never be able to destroy the other. Heath Ledger version of the Joker put it best when and i quote "you cant kill me cause some misguided sense of self rightousness and i cant kill you cause you just too much fun."

i once read a comic book one time where the joker gained the power to munipulate reality and reshape time. he damn near destoyed all existence. the only person he could destroy was Batman not cause Batman defeated him or was stronger then him but because the Joker defines himself on being Batmans enemy. without Batman he'd be nothing. in fact Joker doesnt actually want to kill, in fact he's actually given up countless chances to kill Batman. in Joker twisted mind he fews Batman as his friend, he see's batman as the only person who truly understands him. Joker was actually upset that a man dressed like batman tried to kill him.(not in ever adaptation).

no what he really want is for batman to kill him. cause that would his final victory. every action does is to this end. Killing Jason Todd the Second Robin, Crippling Barbra Gordon the first batgirl, tricking batman into thinking he killed his childhood friend Thomas Elliot.

in contrast Batman has actually fantisizes about killing the Joker(intrestingly enough when Joker died in Arkham City Batman felt guilty over his death) but dosent cause of his moral code(never killing). another reason is cause the joker was created from Batmans actions. in the origins of the joker before the joker became the joker he was villian known as Red Hood. before falling into a vat of acid during a fight with batman. this makes him batmans responsibity. simply put these reasons make the battle between the Joker and Batman an endless struggle.

in the end dynamic is also difficult to apply anywhere else because this dynamic takes alot of time and patients to flesh out. as well as writing mind that thinks nothing is off limits. alot of this might not make sense and you might not be able to understand it all. Hell i still dont completly undertand the dynamic and i wrote five paragraphs about it. hope this explains what you wanna know about it
