I guess it's a bit late but I will still say thanks to I_luv_jesus, HAHA21 and hungryflashes735 for all the comments.

For the brush tool, set the opacity to very low (5-20%) and keep shading repeatedly. You can control the tones of the shadow much easier this way. But you really need to use it a lot to become good at it.
