Layers let me see if i can simplify it (Let me know if i confused you). they are like coloring on transparent paper. that when you look down (on top) they complete the picture. example you can have you outlines on the top, have your colors in the middle and you can have your background at the bottom.But in order for it to work you will need to get rid of the white space (Leaving the outlines) so that it is transparent (other layers can show up through it). but before you can do that you need to double click the layer tittled BACKGROUND and change it to Layer 0.
I hope this is simple (i tend to make things more complicated when i explain things)
