To get better at photoshop you just have to sit down and spend hours playing around with the various tools and options. The things you can do are countless with photoshop.
You have to learn how to use several layers if you want to create a smooth blending of colors or if you want a certain part to have texture or what not. I love using the wet media paintbrush because of the effects you can do with it not to mention the way you can smudge it together to get a crazy looking back ground @_@
One thing that comes in handy is the lighting effects under the Filter tab, Render options you should definetly play around with that because it can create different sources of light and you can also change the color of the light source too.
